LiP Magazine, a national quarterly of radical politics, culture, sex, and humor, is looking to add a Director of Informed Commerce, and an Asst. Director of Informed Commerce, to our team. We realize these titles are odd, but since the mission of our store is first to promote the work of independent, labor- and eco-friendly projects and artisans, and only secondarily to make money, we feel the emphasis of these titles is more fitting.
If you think acquiring the newest and freshest independent magazines, zines, books, t-shirts, buttons, stickers, posters, and other items of informed commerce and selling them on a commission-basis sounds like a fun job, we'd like to talk.
LiP's mission is to use a well-written, well-edited magazine with an accessible pop sensibility to promote a structural understanding of contemporary US and global society while providing tools, strategies, (as well as badly-needed comic relief), for equitable transformation. It's twice been nominated by Utne, in 2003 for Best Online Cultural Coverage, and again in 2004 for Best New Title, and has also garnered a 2005 Best Magazine distinction from Clamor Magazine, and two 2005 Project Censored awards. LiP is also the only non-women-centric independent publication in the U.S. with a majority female editorial group, contributor base, and readership.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The prime task of the Director of Informed Commerce would be to contact publishers, artists, and other media makers about selling their work through LiP's online store. The prime job of the Asst. Director would be to provide production support--web graphics, and copy for new items--for these acquisitions.
The Director and Assistant Director of Informed Commerce will both work with LiP's Director, Managing Editor, and the Ohio-based fulfillment office we collaborate with. (That's right: these positions have no direct fulfillment or shipping responsibilities!) Brainstorm ideas and help produce new LiP items of commerce, help build an online community that supports independent artists and other media makers, and reap a modest commission-based income in the process. Alternative means of compensation (gift certificates, books, trinkets, or platonic love) may also be available.Candidates need not be located in the Oakland Bay Area, where LiP is based. Candidates must be able to commit to at least one year (four issues).
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal Director candidate should have prior online commerce experience, preferably working for a non-corporate project. The Asst. Director should have prior web graphics production experience.
TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION:
Please send resume and cover letter to: jobs@lipmagazine.org, with either "Director of Informed Commerce" or "Assistant Director of Informed Commerce" in the subject line.
LiP welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, and especially those currently or formerly involved with social change work, artistic endeavors, or other interesting side projects. People of color and/or typically marginalized genders are especially encouraged to apply.
