LiP Magazine, a national quarterly of radical politics, culture, sex, and humor, is looking to add an Erotica Editor to our team.
That's right: All things critical, sex-positive, liberated, engaged, and pansexually steamy would be your beat within the pages of LiP. Gender traditionalists, centrists/monists of any kind, or anyone simply interested in surveying the landscape rather than interrogating and transforming it, need not apply. The right person for the job might be acquainted with some or all of the following erotic nodes: Off Our Backs, On Our Backs, NoFauxxx.com, ThatStrangeGirl.com, the Femmerotic network, VegPorn.com, Libido, Greenery Press, Cleis Press, Sweet Action, ThatBirdsNest.com, SmittenKitten.com, Good Vibrations, and Toys in Babeland. Our opinion of the Playboy-linked, heavily commodified Suicide Girls project is low, and we'd be happy to explain our reasons for that to any curious applicants. We're not so keen on semi-ironic retro 70s porn sleaze either, now that we think about it.
Past contributors, titles, and erotic subjects of exploration in LiP have included Susan Faludi's "Porn, Dignity, and the Masculine Mantle"; "Border Crossing: Dominatrix on the Queercore Blitz Tour" (audio review); "Dr.Laura, Sit on My Face: Why Being a Threat is Sexy"; a fiction piece about a sadistic gender-indeterminate sex worker and hir masochistic client that manages to ask What is Sex? What is Gender? And What is Love? in the span of four pages; "Hot Girl on Girl Action: The Peculiar Problem of Politics, Pornography, and Ass-Kicking Babes," by Lisa Jervis; "Power Trip: One Feminist's Take on Domination and Submission," and "Redefining Our Relationships," about the radical political promise of open and alternative relationships.
LiP's mission is to use a well-written, well-edited magazine with an accessible pop sensibility to promote a structural understanding of contemporary US and global society while providing tools, strategies, (as well as badly-needed comic relief), for equitable transformation. It's twice been nominated by Utne, in 2003 for Best Online Cultural Coverage, and again in 2004 for Best New Title, and has also garnered a 2005 Best Magazine distinction from Clamor Magazine, and two 2005 Project Censored awards. LiP is also the only non-women-centric independent publication in the U.S. with a majority female editorial group, contributor base, and readership.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Erotica Editor is a contributing member of our all-volunteer editorial group, and works mostly with the director, managing editor, and associate editors. Brainstorm and develop ideas for upcoming issue themes, identify, contact, and collaborate editorially with new and prospective writers, and contribute your own writing to the project.
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate should have several years of independent writing and editing experience, though not all of it need be erotica. In fact, samples of non-erotic writing of a political nature would be greatly welcomed. Experience publishing under regular deadlines, and the demonstrated ability to brainstorm effectively with strong-willed editorial collaborators is a must, as is a comfort with collaborating primarily by email and phone. The Erotica Editor need not be located in the Oakland Bay Area, where LiP is based. Candidates must be able to commit to at least one year (four issues), and must be aware that this position is, for the foreseeable future, unpaid. Alternative means of compensation (gift certificates, books, trinkets, or platonic love) may be available.
TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION:
Please send resume and at least two writing clips to: jobs@lipmagazine.org, with "Erotica Editor" in the subject line.
Writing samples should reflect a commitment to social change and a radical analysis of race/ethnicity, gender, hierarchy, and class. Samples (or examples) of humorous or satirical writing are also highly welcome, especially if they're funny.
LiP welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, and especially those currently or formerly involved with social change work, artistic endeavors, or other interesting side projects. People of color and/or typically marginalized genders are especially encouraged to apply.
