LiP Magazine, a national quarterly of radical politics, culture, sex, and humor, is looking to add a Books Editor to our team.
LiP's mission is to use a well-written, well-edited magazine with an accessible pop sensibility to promote a structural understanding of contemporary US and global society while providing tools, strategies, (as well as badly-needed comic relief), for equitable transformation. It's twice been nominated by Utne, in 2003 for Best Online Cultural Coverage, and again in 2004 for Best New Title, and has also garnered a 2005 Best Magazine distinction from Clamor Magazine, and two 2005 Project Censored awards. LiP is also the only non-women-centric independent publication in the U.S. with a majority female editorial group, contributor base, and readership.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Section Editor is responsible for identifying new books for review, seeking out authors to write about them, and coordinating the editing process. We'd like to see an average of six book reviews going into every issue, with additional reviews—between issues—going up on our website on a regular basis. The Section Editor will receive help from the other members of the LiP editorial team, but the primary contact with authors and the responsibility for obtaining the minimum number of good reviews for every issue will rest with the Section Editor.
LiP seeks out book reviews that go beyond what's merely presented on the page, providing a deeper analysis and background for the ideas and stories given there. The books we've reviewed, both fiction and nonfiction, ideally present political and cultural concepts that are relevant to our mission. Books we've recently reviewed include: Who Is White?: Latinos, Asians, and the New Black/Nonblack Divide; Dreams of Freedom: The Ricardo Flores Magón Reader; Fledgling; Diet for a Dead Planet; Good Muslim, Bad Muslim; The Children of NAFTA: Labor Wars on the US/Mexico Border; Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate; and Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, among others. Review essays have included "Subversive Content in Sequential Art," "Indigenous Erotica," and "Gender and Incarceration: How Men and Women Experience Life Behind Bars." Please visit our online archive of book reviews, here.
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate should have 2 to 4 years of independent writing and editing experience, and must have experience in working under regular deadlines. Editors must be able to handle multiple tasks in an organized manner, brainstorm effectively with other editors, and have a commitment to the politics and mission of LiP. Section Editors may live anywhere, but must be available and responsive via phone and email.
Section Editors must be able to commit to at least one year (four issues), and must be aware that this position is, for the foreseeable future, unpaid. Alternative means of compensation (gift certificates, books, trinkets, or platonic love) may be available.
TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION:
Please send resume and at least three writing clips to: jobs@lipmagazine.org, with "Books Editor" in the subject line.
Writing samples should reflect a commitment to social change and a radical analysis of race/ethnicity, gender, hierarchy, and class. Samples (or examples) of humorous or satirical writing are also highly welcome, especially if they're funny.
LiP welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, and especially those currently or formerly involved with social change work, artistic endeavors, or other interesting side projects. People of color and/or typically marginalized genders are especially encouraged to apply.
