Job Opportunities
with LiP:
Publisher
LiP magazine, a national quarterly of radical politics, culture, sex, and humor, is looking to add a Publisher to our team.
LiP's mission is to use a well-written, well-edited magazine with an accessible pop sensibility to promote a structural understanding of contemporary US and global society while providing tools, strategies, (as well as badly-needed comic relief), for equitable transformation. It's been nominated by Utne for three awards: in 2003 for Best Online Cultural Coverage, in 2004 for Best New Title, and in 2005 for Best Cultural/Social Coverage. LiP has garnered a 2005 Best Magazine distinction from Clamor Magazine, and two 2005 Project Censored awards. LiP is also the only non-women-centric independent publication in the U.S. with a majority female editorial group, contributor base, and readership.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Publisher is primarily responsible for managing LiP's bookkeeping
and accounting, and serves as the primary contact for our distribution agencies.
The Publisher will also work to develop LiP's Board of Directors and
will assist in cultivating private donors. Other duties will include handling
all taxes, permits, bank statements, checks, invoices, etc. in a timely manner;
advertising management (not sales); negotiating printer bids; communicating
with our fiscal sponsor and online store coordinator, Allied Media Projects;
and setting (and following) LiP's annual budget.
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS::
Candidates should be somewhat familiar with (and eager to learn more about)
the world of independent publishing. Ideally, the Publisher would have experience
in working in some publishing capacity with another periodical. Knowledge of
Quickbooks is essential. The Publisher would ideally live in the Oakland/San
Francisco Bay Area, where LiP is based. The Publisher must also be
able to commit to at least one year, and must be aware that this position is,
for the foreseeable future, unpaid. Alternative means of compensation (gift
certificates, books, trinkets, or platonic love) may be available.
TO APPLY FOR THIS
POSITION::

LiP welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, and especially those currently or formerly involved with social change work, artistic endeavors, or other interesting side projects. People of color and/or typically marginalized genders are especially encouraged to apply.

the U.S.: sharp, witty, and unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom."
-Tim Wise, antiracist activist and author of White Like Me: Notes From a
Privileged Son

the culture today. Witty, but substantial, a product of a brilliant and diverse
collection of excellent writers and contributors, mostly young, LiP
is a must read."

"Intellectually rigorous, politically uncompromising, and consistently
high quality."

everything in it."
